Day 28 - wod death by pull up

With a continuously running clock, do one pull-up and one handstand push-up the first minute, two pull-ups and two handstand push-ups the second minute, three pull-ups and three handstand push-ups the third minute... continuing as long as you are able. When you cannot complete the required number of reps for either exercise, continue only with the other as long as you are able.

Use as many sets in any order each minute as needed

Did 3.3 miles today at about 11am.
Burned 437kcal in 35 minutes.
After 10 hours I burned 2684kcal.

My waist belt works but it has gotten loose, so I have to wear a fitted shirt for it to accurately capture my heart rate.  I still plan to buy a new one.

Day 18 - Crossfit WOD & Day 1 - Paleo

Today I decided to sign up for the Paleo challenge at the gym.  I am a week late, so I have to really hit the ground running.  Wish me luck! 

What is the Paleo diet?
This diet is based on the types of foods that people at prior to the Agricultural revolution (about 10,000 years ago), when everyone was a hunter and gatherer, thus the name Paleo (Paleolithic).  As a result, meals were based on meat and vegetables.  Some other names for this diet is the caveman diet, the hunter-gatherer diet, or the stone age diet.

Day 15 - Brutal 3.3 miles around Grant Park

I tried to get out early, but it was still quite humid at 11am and only 81 degrees.  I jogged and walked 3.3 miles today.  Burned 488kc after 55 minutes.
Let's see how the day goes.

Day 14 - 3 mile jog on the treadmill

Today I decided to take it easy and do a run on the treadmill.  I have a 10k and a half marathon to prepare for in the coming months, so I need to get my runs in when I can.

I did a slow 3 miles today at about 33 minutes.  I burned 367kcal in that 33 minute jog.  I started at about noon today.

At 2pm - 787kcal burned
After 10 hours - 1763kcal burned

Day 13 - La Fitness Lower Body & Core

Today is the first day of working out in the gym with my usual workout.  I will call it the Xavier Full Body Rotational Workout.  With Xavier's workout, he focuses on certain body parts each visit to the gym.  Today was legs, latissimus dorsi (aka lats or back), and abs.  This workout took 1 hour and we started at 11:55am.  We burned 330kcal after the first hour.

Day 12 - 2.2 mile jog (after 7 days vaation)

Just got back from a short vacation, so back to the experiment.

Today @ ~3pm I did a 2.2 mile run around Grant Park.  I should do better and do these runs in the morning or late afternoon.  Its hard to give 100% at 90+ degrees.

Burned 269kcal after 22 minute run.

After 10 hours (1am) I burned 1930kcal.

Day 11 - Bootcamp @ 6:30am

I took a 6pm bootcamp 2 days ago and burned about 250kcal. My hunch is that because it was 91 degrees out, I was too hot to exert my best effort.  In order to do this experiment justice, I have decided to measue bootcamp based on the 6:30am class. 

The challege is waking up this early!  Wish me luck!

In todays class I was 10 minutes late, so hit the park and ran to the group.  I started the watch at this point.  We did 20 minute AMRAP of hate makers (3 rounds of 5 push ups, 20 mountan climbers, and 1 jump and clap), 3 suicide up hill runs, incline situps, twisting squat jumps (360 degree turn into next squat), and pelvic thrust (the naughty 80s move).  We ended with 2 minutes of scissor kicks and stretching.

After the workout I burned 350kcal (30 minutes).  By 7:30am I burned 450kcal.  Let's see what happens all day!

At 9:30 burned 725kcal
At 10:30 burned 980kcal
At 11:30 burner 1130kcal

After 10 hours I burned 1850kcal.

Day 7 - Sedentary Day (A Little R&R)

Today, I am resting my body. It is important to give your body time to recover. CrossFit is a very intense workout and between that and running, my muscles definitely can use some R&R.

For good measure, I am monitoring calorie burn today. The idea is to get as many data points as possible.

I started wearing the waistband at about 9:45am so I will have it on until about 7:45pm.

At 4:10pm, burned 1420kcal
At 7:45pm (10 hours) burned 1954kcal (195kcal per hour)

Day 6 - Atlanta Memorial Mile

It's Memorial Day.

Hats off to all those who have served, are serving, and willing to serve.

I honor of all the men and women who risk their lives, I did the Atlanta Memorial Mile in Kennessaw this morning.  Finished in 7 min 24 seconds. Burned 150kcal during that 7 minutes.  started at about 10 am.
At 2:46pm burned 1121kcal.
After 10 hours (~8pm) I burned 2497kcal.

I have never done CrossFit on a Saturday, but the gym does their own workout (not the HQ workout).  It was tough.  I burned a lot of calories this morning.  In about an hour I burned 450 kcal.

Day 4 - Crossfit WOD

Today's workout:
Seven rounds of:
35 Double-unders
1 Snatch

I did this in 13:10 with total weight 434 (62 lb per snatch).At the end of this I burned 290kcal.
Post WOD was deadlifts
5 rounds 5 reps @ 50% (85 lbs)
5 rounds 3 reps @ 70% (135 lbs)
5 rounds 1 reps @ 90% (185 lbs Failed)

I woke up late so I skipped breakfast. Bad move because I could tell I was running out of fuel.  I did drink some water mixed with Jack3d.  Wonder if this changes calorie burn and how much it improves the workout?  Maybe I will do 1 of of Jack 3d next week in bootcamp to compare.
For lunch I had tuna and crackers.

Day 3 - CrossFit WOD

Had two days rest on tues and wed so I'm back at my week of CrossFit.  I tried to measure my rest day calorie burn but it didn't work out so well because I didn't get good contact on the waist belt. (It needs a little sweat to make a good connection.)

Today I burned 350kcal in crossfit after 55 min.
1 mile run (8min 42sec),

Post WOD:
50 partner pushups,
50 partner ball situps,
50 partner lunges (15lbs),
25 bear complexes (squat clean, thrusters, back thrusters).
Time for post wod ~12min.

At 12:46pm (20 min later) my burn was at 416kcal.  That's another 66kcal post workout! Whoa!
Let's see what it is after a few hours.

In 10 hours I burned 2340kcal.

Day 1 - Calorie Burn on a Sedentary Day

Today is Sunday, May 22, 2011.  I woke up late, so I started tracking my calorie burn at 11:15am.  My watch maxes out at 10 hours, so the measurements will be in 10 hour intervals.
  • 11:15am - 9:15pm - 1860 kcal - Regular day of running errands, surfing the net, reading, etc.  Nothing too out of the norm.  So looks like I burn about 180 kcal per hour on a sedentary day.
  • 10:00pm - 8:00 am - 597kcal - Surfing the web, sleeping, waking. So basically while sleeping I burned about 300kcal.  I went to be late, around 1am but I noticed I had already burned over 200kcal at that point.

How Many Calories Are Burned in Bootcamp?

So far, I have burned between 450kcal and 500 kcal during 40 minutes of bootcamp.  This is great, but the true test will be the long-term burn throughout the day following bootcamp.  Ideally I would like to do bootcamp at the same time everyday, but this may not be feasible.  I will do my best to remain consistent.  The goal is 10 hours of measurement with the first hour starting with the activity.

How Calories Are Burned in a Crossfit Workout of the Day (WOD)

I have been tracking my calorie burn when doing Crossfit WOD for 3 weeks. My average burn during the 45 to 60 minute time frame is 270 Kcal.


What is interesting is not just what you burn during the workout, but what your body burns following the workout. Over the next few days I will be updating my burn during the workout and 9 hours after the workout minus the time it takes for a shower.

What Is This All About?

The goal of this blog is to determine which is the best way to burn calories.  Is it in the gym doing a regular workout with some cardio and some weights, doing a jog, Crossfit, or bootcamp.  For good measure, I am also tracking my calorie burn during days where I am not working out to see what I burn in a regular day doing sedentary activities like working on my computer or reading a book.

I weight 149 lbs.  I am 5' 6".  I have an athletic build.

I use a Sportline Duo Heart rate monitor watch with a chest belt to track my heart rate and calorie burn.  This is one of the most accurate ways to monitor calorie burn.  Keep in mind that everyone is different, so you may burn more or less calories than I do attempting a similar experiment.  The idea here is to use a scientific approach to understanding the effects of various work outs from a caloric perspective on an individual.
